These will take place at the end of freshers week. The audition will require applicants to prepare a short piece or extract from a piece (3-4 minutes) that demonstrates their musical abilities, as well as preparing a given orchestral excerpt which will be emailed out a few days in advance of the auditions weekend. (auditions are very friendly! please don’t feel too pressured, we’re very excited to hear everyone play!)
In addition to the orchestral audition, we are looking for concerto soloists for our spring and summer term concerts. If you are interested, please select the box below when the form prompts you. You will then be asked to perform 10 -15 minutes of that concerto in addition to the previously stated audition requirements.

We are holding in-person auditions, but if you are unable to attend, then a video audition can be arranged. This is only possible if pre-approved by the President, by emailing suso@soton.ac.uk.

| How much are subs/ joining fees?/ Do I have to pay? |
| Subs are £60 for the year; the same as SWO but we get to rehearse in Turner Sims! It covers the conductor, the venues and the ambitious and progressive music we play, as well as all the classics! |
| When are auditions? |
| The weekend of Freshers Week – please look out for the email after you have signed up to book a slot. |
| What if I cannot make it to the audition weekend? |
| We could accept a video audition, but only in very exceptional circumstances. You MUST email suso@soton.ac.uk to have this confirmed in advance BEFORE they submit their video. |
| When/where do you rehearse? |
| We rehearse every Wednesday evening 7-10pm in Turner Sims Concert Hall, on campus. |
| Can I borrow an instrument? |
| Generally no, but there may be some exceptions… |
| What’s the competition like for *insert instrument name here*? |
| Woodwind is typically more competitive than other sections; brass varies year on year and strings is around grade 7/8 standard (if you’re lower than that, still audition! There’s no harm in trying) |
| I don’t want to play, but I want to come to concerts? |

| We do! Generally at least 3 socials a term, with a mix of non-drinking and drinking socials – also, winter ball! |
